Firstly the term “Super foods” is just a wide spread marketing term for foods that have health benefits. They are just normal vegetables but punched with extra large doses of vitamins and minerals. Super foods are mostly plant based, but some fish and dairy products are thought to be nutritionally dense. Thus, good for one’s health. Foods that provide required amounts of nutrition by the in-take of lesser fore-product.

Also remember their is no set criteria for what are and what are not super foods. Few characteristics of super foods are antioxidants, inflammatory aspects, Prevention of diabetics, digestive problems and cancer too. Turmeric, papaya, beans and coconuts are just a few common foods to name.

4 Super foods that are high In nutrients and vitamins

  • Almonds

Among all nuts, almonds are super foods of nuts and consist the highest amounts of nutrients per calorie and per ounce. Raw almonds provide higher benefits rather then consuming them roasted or baked with honey or milk. In turn providing additional sodium and carbohydrates which surely is not advisable.

  • Lotus seeds

Fox seeds or lotus seeds are bland, but agreeable taste. Containing high amounts of protein, magnesium and potassium. Lotus seeds provide anti-aging and calming effect. Mainly known for reducing pathogenic heat in your body, it helps in cooling process of your heart.

The cultivation of lotus seeds are highly labor intensive and are moderately expensive. Usually found in Asian and Indian cuisines in the form of curries and soups. They can also be rendered for desserts such as low fat makhana kheer and lotus baked buns in the respective cuisines.

  • Sweet potatoes

Sweet potato is a low calorie and high fiber rooted vegetable. Sourcing a good amount of beta carotene and vitamin C, benefiting your body to produce higher levels of blood. The flesh color of sweet potatoes range from orange to purple. Sometime its impossible to identify the rich color tones by just looking at the skins.

It implies as a best antioxidant and anti-inflammatory among the rooted vegetables. Choose sweet potatoes that are firm and do not have any cracks, bruises or soft spots. Avoid those that are displayed in the refrigerated section of the produce department since cold temperature negatively alters their taste.
